Richard Hamilton schrieb darüber bewundernd: "As a printmaker he had few competitors, whether in screenprinting, etching, colotype, stone-lithography, offset, the Polaroid camera, or the photocopier - if a medium didn’t exist for the print he would discover it."

In addition to this, we will be showing several Misprints and the 5 Offset Pre-Prints, which Dieter Roth selected and signed in 1969/70.

Dieter Roth’s innovations in the field of printing and duplication of art are innumerable. Richard Hamilton wrote, in awe: "As a printmaker he had few competitors, whether in screenprinting, etching, colotype, stone-lithography, offset, the Polaroid camera, or the photocopier. If a medium didn’t exist for the print he would discover it."
The project "The Piccadillies" shows that Roth envisioned forms of print distribution and production that were not yet possible. The production concept dealt with is "print on demand", which Roth developed in 1970/71, to produce his best known graphic series "6 Piccadillies". He then selected 32 images to create the "Piccadilly Alphabet". This consists of the actual "6 Piccadillies", 5 Offset Pre-Prints, 7 selected Misprints and 4 Overpaintings.
Roth planned to offer these 32 images in various sizes and editions. Thus he invented the "Giant Picadilly Puzzle" and the "Intermediate Picadilly". The "Giant Piccadilly Puzzle" divides one of the images from the "Piccadilly Alphabet" into 16 parts and is placed in a "screw and washer frame" designed especially by Roth. The image becomes a puzzle where each part can be moved within the frame (192x276). The "Intermediate Piccadilles" are enlargements of the "Piccadilly Alphabet" (88x133).

In the 70s Dieter Roth entrusted the project to the publisher and printer Hansjörg Mayer. Together they made multiple attempts to realize the project but the available techniques were all inapt for a high quality implimentation where production of individual prints would also be possible on demand. The development of the inkjet print technique made it possible, for the first time, to produce prints on acid free rag paper with non-fading pigment inks. Only now is it possible to produce the print quality Roth envisioned. Hence, Hansjörg Mayer and the Roth Estate decided to realize the project.

To document the "print on demand"- project, Hansjörg Mayer published the book "The Piccadillies" (96 pgs., 250 col. images, 22 Euro) in October 2005. It tells the entire story of the project and simultaneously functions as an ordering catalogue for the prints. Furthermore he published the "Piccadilly Postcard Puzzle", which brings the "Giant Piccadilly Puzzle" back to its original format, the postcard (96 postcards in linen box, 30 Euro).

Various "Giant Piccadilly Puzzles", the "Intermediate Piccadillies" and the prints from "Half-Size Overpainted Piccadillies" (39x45), will be shown in our exhibition Dieter Roth, "The Piccadillies" (9. December 2005 – 15. February 2006) for the first time in Germany. These "Half-Size Overpainted Piccadillies" originals were produced by Roth in 1976 and he determined them as part of the "print on demand"- project.
